AUSTIN
LIVE MUSIC
GUIDE
The Live Music Capital of the World — every night, every genre.
Austin has more live music venues per capita than any other city in the US — and the music plays every single night. The city's live music identity runs deep: from the world-famous Austin City Limits TV show (taped at the Moody Center) to the nightly free shows on 6th Street, music is woven into the fabric of everyday life here. This guide is your starting point.

Why Austin is the Live Music Capital.
Austin's live music scene has roots in the 1970s, when Armadillo World Headquarters drew progressive country and rock acts to what was then a college town with strong hippie and counterculture ties. Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Janis Joplin (an Austin native) were central to the sound. Austin City Limits, the longest-running music program in US television history, began taping at UT in 1976 and cemented the city's national music identity.
Today, there are more than 250 music venues in Austin — from 20,000-capacity arenas to dive bars with two barstools and a guitar amp. SXSW, the annual music conference and festival held every March, brings more than 2,000 acts from around the world and is one of the most important events in the global music industry. Austin City Limits Festival each October draws 75,000 people a day to Zilker Park.
But the real music scene isn't the festivals — it's every Tuesday night at the Continental Club, the jazz at Elephant Room, the free shows on Red River Street. Austin's music is a daily, living thing. You just have to show up.
